The scientific community of the Republic of Moldova received with profound sorrow the news of the passing of the eminent scientist Professor Antonino Zichichi.
Please accept, in these moments of grief, our sincere condolences and deepest sympathy.
For us in Moldova, Professor Zichichi was not only a world-renowned physicist and an outstanding scientific personality, but also a true and constant friend of our academic community. Over many decades, he generously supported the development of young Moldovan researchers, offering fellowships and the opportunity to participate in the prestigious schools and international seminars at Erice. Many of these young scholars, inspired by his vision and example, chose the path of science and have become today respected researchers and professors.
Professor Antonio Zichichi showed special appreciation for the Republic of Moldova and for the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, which elected him Honorary Member — a distinction he carried with dignity and affection. Through his work within the World Federation of Scientists and the Ettore Majorana Centre in Erice, he consistently promoted international scientific cooperation, dialogue among nations, and the moral responsibility of scientists toward humanity.
For me personally, his passing is also the loss of a great friend and mentor — a man of rare intellectual and human nobility, who believed in the potential of science in Moldova and supported it with generosity and trust.
His memory will remain alive in our hearts and in the scientific community he inspired and shaped.
